Have you ever been drunk and waiting for your Uber when suddenly a number you don’t know calls and you have to make the decision about whether or not to answer it?
For some odd reason, there is always a stressful debate in these situations even though you know it has to be your Uber driver calling to find out where your drunk ass is.
Who else would be cold calling you at 2am?
Uber has decided, however, to eliminate the anxiety that lingers behind these unknown calls by updating their app to now include an in-app messaging system with your driver.
If you listen closely, you can almost hear the collective sigh of relief that all awkward people just breathed.
Now you can just text your driver through the app to let them know exactly where you’ve wandered off to. Supposedly it will also let you know when your driver has received your message, so it’s like a built in mandatory read receipt system.
We think that this is, in theory, a wonderful update, but we would be lying if we said that we don’t also foresee a wild amount of drunken typos and annoyance that ultimately leads to a call anyways.
Who knows, maybe we’re wrong and this system will be a flawless redesign. No matter if it ends up being useful or not, it’s nice to now have the option to communicate in a more direct, yet oddly removed way.
