22-year-old Iraqi Influencer and fashion model Tara Fares was fatally shot in Baghdad.
Tara Fares was a beloved influencer, model and former beauty queen with over 3+ million followers on Instagram. She was often praised for speaking up about women’s rights even though her country has pretty conservative views regarding women. Many fans believe that Tara’s death is directly related to her activism and outspokenness.
Tara’s death screams discrimination, lack of freedom and rights. Her death should be set as an example — those responsible accounted for.
Sympathy is not enough.

Tara was visiting Baghdad on the day of her death.
“Her family told me that she was there to buy a house for them. But unfortunately, they killed her,” Mukdad Abu Athab, head of the mosque where Tara’s funeral was held, shared with the NY Times.
A gunmen shot at Tara in the streets of Kam Sara in broad daylight. She was taken to a local hospital and doctors informed news outlets that she did not survive the shooting. Tara’s parents also announced the sad news on Instagram. The caption for the photo reads “In a treacherous and cowardly incident, Tara Fares Chamoun, is with God. We asked God to accept her with His great mercy.”
Although her death is currently being investigated, authorities have not discovered the identity of her killers. Tara’s death is especially troubling because a similar incident happened to another popular Iraqi women’s rights activist Suad al-ali. Suad was fatally shot the exact way Tara was gunned down in her car in her hometown of Basra and many fear this will start a trend.
Tara will be remembered by those close to her as a funny, kind-hearted and giving person. Fans took to social media to express their anger over the young model’s murder.

The murder of Tara Fares just reminds us how corrupt and disgusting the mentality in the East truly is. I can’t wait till the mentality of “ayb” diminishes from our vocabulary.
