Remember bronies? Indie developer Mane6 sure does. It’s been working on its debut game for over five years.
Back when the team began, the game was called My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic, based on the latest media incarnation of the popular toy franchise initially helmed by Lauren Faust (director from The Powerpuff Girls).
The adult fan stampede to embrace My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic resulted in a cottage industry of fan creations including fan episodes, conventions, a documentary, and a 2D fighter video game. Unluckily, the powers that be considered this a step too far. Hasbro’s legal team slapped Mane6 with a cease & desist, but with development already underway they were not to be deterred. Lauren Faust reached out to them offering new, copyright-free character designs, and Them’s Fightin’ Herds was born from the ashes. Development continued, funded by a heap of fan-cash via IndieGoGo. If this trailer is to be believed, Mane6’s long and checkered journey is almost at an end.
The game has a Windows PC release date of February 22nd, and looks to have retained the visual polish and colorful designs of the initial project, mixed with some charming retro pixel art in the non-battle scenes. Ever wanted to beat up one of those snooty unicorns with a lovable alpaca? You know where to go.
