It’s no secret that Miley Cyrus is the queen of reinvention. As her fans, we’re lucky enough to witness Miley channel these lifestyle changes into her music. 2013 gave us Bangerz, a radically short haircut, twerking, and dancing bears. 2015’s psychedelic Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz was all about weed, sex, and the universe, man. And finally, after what feels like forever (but really has only been two years,) 2017 has gifted us an entirely new version of the pop star. She’s breezy, she’s fresh-faced, and her hair only has two colors in it!
Earlier in May, 24-year-old Cyrus revealed in her Billboard cover story that her forthcoming album would be include “unprecedented dose of twang to a mix that includes quiet acoustic turns and epic pop.” “This is Miley leaning into her roots more than I’ve ever heard,” says her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. On Thursday, we were given our first dose of this brand new Miley with the release of her latest single, “Malibu.” (Or is it the old Miley?) Even better: she premiered a beautiful music video to go along with the song. And as far as watching it goes, in the words of Miley herself: we caaaan’t stopppp…and neither can fans on social media!
Fans have fallen in love with the love song
Over 48 hours after the release, it’s still one of the top trending videos on YouTube (17 million views and counting.) It’s also #1 on the iTunes charts.

Why the continued buzz?
Aside from the fact that Cyrus undoubtedly has one of the most unpredictable, unique careers in recent pop history, it’s the raw honesty and emotion on this track that makes it so special. Miley has been open about the fact that the song is dedicated to fiance Liam Hemsworth, with whom Cyrus reunited last year after breaking up in 2013. (Miley and Liam live together on Liam’s compound in — where else? — Malibu.)

Miley took to Instagram on Friday to express her gratitude for the immediate success of the song. In the up close and personal post, Cyrus can’t help but smile from ear to ear.
She confesses: “I am so excited and thankful for y’all allowing me to write the songs of my dreams…I love you love you love you, thank you!”
